Bunker Hill receives $108,289 KAN STEP grant for new community center

The City of Bunker Hill will use volunteer labor from the community and $108,289 in KAN STEP funding from the Kansas Department of Commerce (Commerce) to build a new community center. The City of Bunker Hill is located in Russell County in central Kansas. Presently, the City of Bunker Hill does not have a community building.

The proposed 40' x 80' facility will house a meeting room, kitchen, restrooms and a storage garage. It will provide meeting space for local youth organizations, as well as provide the community with a facility to hold social events. The total cost of the community center is $180,683, which includes $72,394 in volunteer labor and the KAN STEP grant of $108,289.

The project architect is Donnie Marrs of DMA Architects, Salina, KS. Grant administration will be provided by Michele Kippes of Northwest Kansas Planning and Development. Juli Reiss is the project sparkplug. Kansas Rural Water Association will provide inspection services and technical assistance.

KAN STEP is a self-help program that enables small communities to make major infrastructure improvements. Local people volunteer labor and services, while the Kansas Department of Commerce provides funding for materials and technical services. An acronym for Kansas Small Towns Environment Program, KAN STEP gives small Kansas communities an opportunity to do projects they couldn't otherwise afford. The funding is provided through the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.
