City of Culver Receives $236,757 KAN STEP Grant To Replace Water System

The City of Culver, a small community located approximately 15 miles northwest of Salina, has been awarded a $236,757 KAN STEP Grant to replace much of the public water system. The project will replace of all main loops through the city and reconnect the old mains that were not replaced. Twelve hydrants will be replaced as well as 20 valves. Open trench replacement and abandoning the existing pipe in place is the most cost effective method. Volunteers will provide $147,004 in donated labor and/or services for the project. The proposed new water distribution system will include the following:

• 10,800 of PVC water main lines
• 1,700 of service main lines
• 20 gate valves with boxes
• 57 service assemblies
• 8 fire hydrant settings
• 4 flush hydrant settings
• 12,800 tracer wire
• Connection to existing waterline
• Removing and replacing surfacing

Citizens have been told that access to the streets they live on could be hindered for a day or two during construction. Because the streets are dirt right now, access to the pipes is a simpler process and repair of the streets for the volunteers will be easier than if they were paved.

The project engineer is BG Consultants, Manhattan. Grant administration will be provided by North Central Kansas Planning Commission, Beloit. The Kansas Rural Water Association will provide construction assistance and inspection services.
