Dickinson County receives KAN STEP award for fire station at Woodbine

A new fire station will be constructed in Dickinson County at Woodbine, thanks to a $299,952 KAN STEP grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce.

The KAN STEP grant will pay for a new 5,760 square foot facility; it has an estimated retail cost of $539,082. This includes volunteer labor valued at $239,130 and the KAN STEP grant of $299,952.

The overall dimensions of the Fire District 1 Station are 72 feet x 80 feet. The Woodbine Fire Station includes three bay doors and a fourth door for the first responder vehicle. A training room with storage above and a serving area will be included.

The project architect is Dan Hall with BG Consultants, Manhattan. Grant administration will be provided by Doug McKinney of North Central Kansas Planning Commission. . The volunteer "sparkplug" for the project is Russell Riffel. The Kansas Rural Water Association will provide inspection services and technical assistance to the volunteers.

KAN STEP is a self-help program that is funded by the Kansas Department of Commerce through the federally funded Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG). Under KAN STEP, local people volunteer labor and services or "sweat equity," while the KAN STEP Grant provides funding for materials and technical services. KAN STEP is an acronym for Kansas Small Towns Environment Program.
