    Glasco Fire Station

Glasco received KAN STEP grant for new fire station
The Kansas Department of Commerce (Commerce) has awarded
the City of Glasco a $237,957 grant to help construct a new fire station. Glasco
is located in Cloud County in north-central Kansas.
The grant is awarded through Commerce's KAN STEP program, a self-help program
that enables small communities to make major infrastructure improvements. Local
people volunteer labor and services, while Commerce provides funding for
materials and technical services. An acronym for Kansas Small Towns Environment
Program, KAN STEP gives small Kansas communities an opportunity to do projects
they couldn't otherwise afford. The funding is provided through the federal
Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.
The new fire station will measure 50' x 135'-6". The facility will include five
bays: an EMS bay, a wash bay, two fire truck bays and a recycle center bay. The
individual rooms consist of a training room, an EMS office, a fire station
office, restrooms, storage and janitor's room. The total retail cost of the
9,000-square-foot building will be $399,311, which includes $161,354 in
volunteer labor and a KAN STEP grant of $237,957.
The Sparkplugs for the project are Larry Schulte and Clark Darnall. Architect
for the project is Rosemann & Associates, Overland Park, KS. Grant
administration will be provided by North Central Planning Commission, Beloit,
KS. The Kansas Rural Water Association provides on-site assistance and
inspection services to the KAN STEP program.
