Goff Community Center
Volunteer
workers are having a good time and showing great progress on the new community
center being constructed in Goff. Goff is located in the southeastern corner of
Nemaha County in northeastern Kansas; the city has a population of about 150
people. The new community center is being constructed under the KAN STEP
program. KAN STEP is an acronym for Kansas Small Town Environment Program that
is funded through the Kansas Department of Commerce and Housing. The Goff
Community Center has an estimated market value of $396,308 and is being
subsidized through a $250,000 KAN STEP grant and volunteer participation. KAN
STEP has successfully used "sweat equity" to help communities reduce costs of
water system improvements and now, fire stations and community centers.
The
Project Representative at Goff is Katie Heinen; the Grant Administrator is Donna
Crawford of Governmental Assistance Services, Lawrence; the Architect is Dan
Hall of BG Consultants; Steve Duryea and Shane Holthaus are the Technical
Assistants responsible. The Kansas Rural Water Association provides Inspection
Services and Assistance. Goff's community center will have a kitchen, dining
room and meeting room, two bathrooms, and a 357 sq. ft. concrete storm shelter
that is designed for approximately 70 people. The heating and air conditioning,
concrete slab work and the storm shelter were put out for bids.
