KAN STEP To Improve City of Morrowville Water System

The city of Morrowville has been approved to receive a $131,442 KAN STEP grant to make improvements to the city's water system. A "post-award" meeting was held at Morrowville on June 1 between Kansas Department of Commerce Program Manager Salih Doughramaji, city officials and Kansas Rural Water Association.

Morrowville is located in Washington County in north-central Kansas. KAN STEP is the acronym for Kansas Small Town Environment Program that is funded through the Kansas Department of Commerce and Housing. KAN STEP has successfully used 'sweat equity' to help communities reduce costs of water system improvements in several communities and numerous fire stations and community centers across Kansas. Morrowville volunteers will be donating $94,839 in labor and services. The Manhattan Konza Rotary Club has also indicated some participation by Rotarians to help on the Morrowville project, as well as a cash donation of $4,000. Consultant for the project is Stuart Porter, Schwab - Eaton, P.A., Manhattan, KS.

Morrowville's water project will involve replacement of a main transmission line that is presently located under Kansas Highway 15. This location has been troublesome in that various breaks have been disruptive to traffic. Additional work will include looping of some lines and replacement of other sections of main. Members of the Core Committee are Council Members Ed Miller and Scott Mizer, and operator Jerry Baker.
