Pleasanton Community Center

City of Pleasanton to Build Community Center and Storm Shelter Through KAN STEP Program

Pleasanton, Kan. is a small town in Linn County whose citizens take pride in their community and civic involvement. A fire had destroyed several downtown buildings, leaving a prominent corner as a vacant lot. In evaluating possible uses for the site, the City determined it to be an ideal location for a new community meeting center that could accommodate up to 200 people for school reunions, weddings, civic celebrations, fire department training, etc. There is also need for a storm shelter for up to 100 people.

Alternatives for consideration included the need for a large assembly space, a small kitchen with residential fixtures for light cooking, storage for tables and chairs, a lobby space as the primary entry point, a porch with concrete slab; restrooms and an unfinished room for future commercial grade kitchen used for preparing senior citizen meals, an office and dry storage and prep rooms to be unfinished at the time of construction. Also a smaller dining or meeting space will be incorporated.

The new wood-frame building will measure 160 feet x 40 feet facility; it will have a brick front. The interior storm shelter will be poured concrete.

The project architect is Zingre and Associates, P.A., Fort Scott, KS. Grant administration will be provided by Southeast Kansas Regional Planning. The Kansas Rural Water Association will provide inspection and technical assistance.
