St. Paul receives KAN STEP award for fire station addition

The City of St. Paul has been awarded a $179,891 KAN STEP grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce to construct a 2,750 sq. foot addition to their existing fire station. St. Paul is located in Neosho County in southeast Kansas.

The project has an estimated retail cost of $301,206. This includes volunteer labor valued at $121,315 and the KAN STEP grant of $179,891.

The dimensions of the St. Paul Fire Station addition are 50 feet x 55 feet. The Fire Station addition includes four bay doors. One will be a pull-through bay. The truck bay area will have a trough drain and room for lockers.

The artchitect is Dan Hall with BG Consultants, Manhattan. Grant administration will be provided by Becky Voorhies Southeast Kansas Regional Planning Commission. The volunteer "sparkplug" for the project is Roy Paisley. The Kansas Rural Water Association will provide inspection services and technical assistance to the volunteers.


KAN STEP is a self-help program that enables small communities to make major infrastructure improvements. Local people volunteer labor and services or "sweat equity," while the Kansas Department of Commerce provides funding for materials and technical services. An acronym for Kansas Small Towns Environment Program, KAN STEP gives small Kansas communities an opportunity to do projects they couldn't otherwise afford. The funding is provided through the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.
