Library District No. 1 Receives $299,955 KAN STEP Award To Improve Library in Troy

Library District No. 1 Receives $299,955 KAN STEP Award To Improve Library in Troy

KAN STEP Project No. 14-ST-003 will fund $299,955 towards the renovation of the Library in Troy, Kansas. Troy is located in Doniphan County in extreme northeast Kansas.

As the city’s population has increased over the last five years (2009 to 2014) it has become apparent that the library must have improvements to ensure the entire population can be serviced especially the handicapped that has also increased due to the aging population.

Extra space and improvements will be accomplished by gutting the inside of the present library and by completing all necessary upgrades to meet state and federal compliance issues. The city also investigated other funding sources to complete the Library upgrade. The project includes the selective demolition of the existing facade. The new facade includes waterproofing, insulating glass, adding alarm exit door from children’s library, outdoor book media return, entrance vestibule, automatic door operators, framing and finishing of doors windows, adding ramps, stairs handrails, replacement of floors, walls and ceilings. Volunteers will also construct new ADA bathrooms, storage and janitor room. The project will include two new heating and air conditioning systems. The city has 58 committed persons to perform the needed labor to complete the Library upgrades plus the Industrial Art class of Troy High School and the Boy Scouts who are committing six hours of community services. Project architect is BG Consultants, Manhattan, KS. Inspection and technical assistance will be provided by Kansas Rural Water Association.
